Rich Mullins: Gospel Music Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony

Recorded live on April 29, 2014 | Nashville, TN

In 2014, nearly 17 years after his tragic death, Rich Mullins was posthumously inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame—joining the ranks of legends like Amy Grant, Andraé Crouch, and Keith Green. The ceremony took place on April 29, 2014, and was streamed live online. That night, Rich’s legacy as a fearless songwriter, prophetic voice, and musical pioneer was honored by friends, family, and fans around the world.

Ragamuffin Archive: Classics is thrilled to present a full audio recording of that induction ceremony—captured in high quality from a radio station production room by longtime Rich Mullins fan and Ragamuffin Archive founder Joe Cook. Though unable to screen capture the stream that evening, because he was working a shift at 92.1 FM WVLT in Vineland, New Jersey, Joe still managed to preserve the complete audio as it aired live.

The ceremony features a heartfelt speech from acclaimed artist Matt Maher, who reflected on his experience collaborating with Rich on a live production of  Rich’s musical, Canticle of the Plains. Also speaking that night was Rich’s brother, David Mullins, who shared personal reflections about Rich’s life, family roots, and spiritual legacy. His words added a poignant, intimate layer to an already emotional evening.

The musical highlight of the night came from Michael W. Smith, who performed Rich’s most iconic song, “Awesome God.” While Smith has sung the chorus of “Awesome God” many times throughout his career, this performance was notable for including the verses—something rarely heard in public tributes. It was a fitting tribute to a man who never seemed to write for radio, but for the glory of God and the comfort of weary souls.

In addition to the full audio, we’ve included a special video edit at the bottom of this page, featuring footage captured by fellow fan Michael Duell, synced with our broadcast-quality audio for the clearest and most complete experience possible.

Rich Mullins once said, “I would rather live on the verge of falling, and let my security be in the all-sufficiency of the grace of God.” His induction into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame is a reminder that such a life, lived radically for Christ, leaves an enduring echo. We’re honored to preserve that echo for future generations through this archive.
